How long until a habit sticks?
The “21 days” figure traces back to a 1960 self-help book, not a study. When researchers at University College London followed 96 people adding a daily habit (Lally et al., 2010, European Journal of Social Psychology), the time to reach automaticity ranged from 18 to 254 days, with a median of 66. Missing a single day did not meaningfully set people back.
That last finding is why the reset button keeps your best run: one slip is data, not failure. The milestone ladder here (3, 7, 14, 21, 30, 50, 66, 100 days and up) gives you something close enough to aim for.
Streaks that count down instead
If your goal has an end date, such as a 30-day challenge or a dry month, make it a countdown instead, or track the days since you started with the days since calculator.
Questions people ask
What is a streak tracker?
A day counter for a habit you want to keep going (running, no sugar, daily writing) or a behaviour you want to stay away from (smoking, doom-scrolling). It shows the current run and remembers your best.
What happens when I reset a streak?
The current count goes back to zero from today, and your longest run is kept as your personal best, along with how many resets you have had.
How many days does it take to form a habit?
Not 21. A University College London study (Lally et al., 2010) found automaticity took from 18 to 254 days, with a median of 66 days, depending on the person and habit.
Are my streaks private?
Yes. They are stored only in this browser. Nothing is uploaded.
